Milivoj Uzelac (painter)

Milivoj Uzelac (July 23, 1897 - 6 June 1977) was a Croatian painter.

Uzelac was born in Sarajevo and attended high school in Banja Luka. There he befriended Vilko Gecan, another classic of Croatian modern art. There he began to paint, and in 1912, his family moved to Zagreb where occasionally attends the Academy under the leadership of Tomislav Krizman and later desisted. After the outbreak of World War II escapes from the mobilization in Prague where he worked with Czech artist Jan Preisler. There with three other artists - Vilko Gecan, Marijan Trepše and Vladimir Varlaj - form a group of four, and comes into contact with the art of Expressionism whose style will make the most of their group.

When the war ended, in 1919 he returned to Zagreb, where the other members of the troupe regularly exhibits his work at the Spring Salon . In this period created his most famous masterpieces. In 1923 he moved to Paris where he acquired a high reputation. He remained France until his death, in Cotignac.

In 1971 the Modern Gallery in Zagreb held his first retrospective exhibition. Between 27 November 2008 and 11 January 2009 the Art Pavilion in Zagreb hosted the second of his retrospective exhibition at which images are collected from a large number of galleries, private collections, as well as his hitherto unknown works.
